Fireworks and Pet Safety

At Barkaritaville Pet Resort, Fourth of July is a time for celebration, marked by barbeques, fun with friends and family, and, of course, fireworks. While these festivities are exciting for us humans, they can be stressful and frightening for our pets. The loud noises and bright flashes of fireworks can cause anxiety for our dogs and cats, leading to panic and potentially dangerous behaviors. More pets reportedly go missing around the Fourth of July than any other time of the year.

As a responsible pet owner, it’s essential to take steps to ensure your furry friends feel safe and secure during the celebrations. Here are Barkaritaville’s tips to help you prepare and keep your pets calm on Independence Day.

Create a Safe Space

Designate a quiet, comfortable area in your home where your pet can retreat during the fireworks. This could be a cozy room with minimal windows or a crate covered with a blanket.  Keep familiar items nearby, like their favorite toys, blankets, and bedding to provide a sense of security and comfort.

Use Calming Aids

Consider using calming aids such as pheromone diffusers, calming collars, or anxiety wraps like the Thundershirt to help reduce stress. Natural remedies like lavender oil (used safely and in moderation) or specially formulated calming treats can also be beneficial. One product that has worked wonders with our own pets is a CBD chew by Super Snouts Hemp Company called “Chill Out,” which is available for purchase in the lobbies of both our San Antonio and Corpus Christi locations.

Maintain Routine

Stick to your pet’s regular routine as much as possible, including feeding times, walks, and playtime. A predictable schedule can help reduce anxiety. Also, try to exercise your pet earlier in the day on the holiday to help them expend energy and promote relaxation during the evening’s festivities.

Block Out the Noise

Close windows, doors, and curtains to help muffle the sound of fireworks. You can also play white noise or calming music to drown out the loud noises. The TV or radio may also provide a familiar background sound that can help distract your pet from the fireworks.

Stay Calm

Pets can pick up on their owners’ emotions, so it’s important to remain calm and composed. Reassure your pet with gentle words and actions, but avoid over-coddling, as this can reinforce anxious behavior. Engage in normal activities and try to act as if nothing unusual is happening, providing a sense of normalcy for your pet.

Secure Your Pet

Ensure your pet is wearing a collar with up-to-date identification tags in case they manage to escape in a panic. Double-check that all doors, windows, and gates are securely closed to prevent your pet from running away if they become frightened.

Take Care Post-Fireworks

Because your pet may still be anxious after the fireworks have stopped, be sure to pay extra attention to escape attempts. If you’re taking your dog out, be sure to keep them on a leash, make sure you know where your cat is hiding, and give your pet a session of your calm touch.

With a bit of planning and preparation, you can help your pet feel safe and secure during the Fourth of July festivities. By creating a calm environment, using soothing aids, and maintaining a routine, you can reduce their anxiety and ensure they stay safe amidst the celebrations. Remember, your pet’s well-being is a priority, and taking these steps will allow both you and your furry friend to enjoy a stress-free holiday.
